Learn more about the medication that could manage your inflammatory bowel disease.
Have you been diagnosed with an inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease? If so, then our Troy, MI, gastroenterologists may have recommended (along with modifying certain habits and lifestyles) that you take Remicade® to help manage your symptoms. What is Remicade® and what can it do to help your condition?
Remicade® is a prescription medication that is used to help treat both pain and inflammation. While it can be used to help manage pain caused by a variety of different conditions from certain kinds of arthritis to autoimmune diseases, this medication can also be a great way to keep your inflammatory bowel disease symptoms under control.
Those with Crohn’s disease deal with chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract. This can cause some pretty miserable symptoms ranging from abdominal pain to diarrhea. Ulcerative colitis also faces the same inflammatory symptoms. Those with severe ulcerative colitis may even develop digestive ulcers, which can be severely painful. If you have moderate-to-severe inflammatory bowel disease that hasn’t been responding to other medications or lifestyle changes then it might be the perfect time to talk to our Troy, MI, GI doctor about whether Remicade® might be able to better manage your symptoms.
Remicade® is typically administered through an IV over the course of a couple of hours. You will receive the first three doses a few weeks apart from each other, with maintenance infusions happening about every six to eight weeks after. Before getting Remicade® we will need you to come in for an evaluation so that we can understand more about your condition and your symptoms. We will also need to go through your medical history to determine if there are certain pre-existing health conditions that could be negatively impacted by this medication. We will also provide you with a list of possible side effects and when a certain side effect warrants coming into the office right away.
