As images are collected by the "scope" inside the body, or composed by ultrasound echoes, they are displayed on video monitors, much like typical computer screens to guide the physician in his examination and diagnosis.
Increasingly, these technologies are being used together in endoscopic and laparascopic ultrasound where the ultrasound probe is introduced internally, via the hollow channel in an endoscope, allowing for much better resolution and accuracy. Recent developments in new and more assessable diagnostic and detection techniques, and more widespread use of less invasive endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures have drastically reduced the necessity for open surgery.
