Liver BiopsyPrint this...

A percutaneous liver biopsy is a bedside procedure by which a small (usually half the size of a toothpick) sample of liver tissue is obtained using a hollow needle.  This takes only 5 to 10 minutes.  This procedure is usually done using an injection of a local numbing anesthetic.

  • After your appointment has been scheduled, please call the Appointment Center at (248) 577-9700 to pre-register.  If possible, this should be done about one week prior to your exam.
  • If it is necessary to cancel this test, please call our office at (248) 273-9930, ext. 3034 or ext. 3036.
  • Blood thinners, such as Coumadin, and aspirin containing products should be stopped one week prior to the procedure.
  • You must have someone available to drive you home after the procedure is completed.
  • Report to registration before your procedure is scheduled.
Day Before Test:
  • Have a light dinner the night prior to your procedure.

Day of Test:

  • Have a light breakfast or a cup of coffee in the morning.
  • Take your usual medications, other than blood thinners such as Coumadin or aspirin containing products.
  • After the procedure is completed, you will be asked to stay in bed for 6 to eight hours.  This is most essential as your blood pressure, pulse and clinical evaluation are monitored for any complications.
  • Patients are normally allowed to leave for home 8 to 10 hours after the biopsy.
