A percutaneous liver biopsy is a bedside procedure by which a small (usually half the size of a toothpick) sample of liver tissue is obtained using a hollow needle. This takes only 5 to 10 minutes. This procedure is usually done using an injection of a local numbing anesthetic.
- After your appointment has been scheduled, please call the Appointment Center at (248) 577-9700 to pre-register. If possible, this should be done about one week prior to your exam.

- Blood thinners, such as Coumadin, and aspirin containing products should be stopped one week prior to the procedure.
- You must have someone available to drive you home after the procedure is completed.
- Report to registration before your procedure is scheduled.
Day Before Test:
- Have a light dinner the night prior to your procedure.
Day of Test:
- Have a light breakfast or a cup of coffee in the morning.
- Take your usual medications, other than blood thinners such as Coumadin or aspirin containing products.
- After the procedure is completed, you will be asked to stay in bed for 6 to eight hours. This is most essential as your blood pressure, pulse and clinical evaluation are monitored for any complications.
- Patients are normally allowed to leave for home 8 to 10 hours after the biopsy.
