EUS allows your doctor to examine the lining and walls of your digestive tract and to study the internal organs that lie next to the gastrointestinal tract, such as the gall bladder and pancreas. This test uses a special endoscope that produces sound waves to create a visual image of the digestive tract. Before the procedure, you will be given an I.V. sedative.
If your test is scheduled before 12 Noon:
- Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before your examination.
- No medication of any kind including Maalox, Mylanta, etc., after 12:00 p.m. the night prior to the exam. However, heart and blood pressure medications may be taken with a small amount of water around 6:00 a.m.
If your test is scheduled after 12 Noon:
- If your test is scheduled for after 12:00 noon, you may have a clear liquid breakfast and take your normal morning dose of medications, if any.
- Do not take anything by mouth after 8:30 a.m.
YOU MUST BE ACCOMPANIED TO THE PROCEDURE BY SOMEONE WHO CAN STAY THERE AS LONG AS YOU ARE THERE AND WHO WILL BE ABLE TO DRIVE YOU HOME AFTERWARDS. THIS PROCEDURE WILL BE CANCELLED IF THE PERSON THAT ACCOMPANIES YOU LEAVES THE PREMISES.
