Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)
This procedure is a direct examination of your food pipe, stomach, and a portion of the small bowel. A gastroscope is a small, flexible instrument, about the diameter of a pencil, with a light and a lens at the end which allows your doctor to see your upper digestive tract. Before the procedure, you will be given an I.V. sedative. Oral topical (spray) medication will also be given to numb your mouth and throat.
If your test is scheduled before 12 Noon:
- Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before your examination.
- No medication of any kind including Maalox, Mylanta, etc., after 12:00 p.m. the night prior to the exam. However, heart and blood pressure medications may be taken with a small amount of water around 6:00 a.m.
If your test is scheduled after 12 Noon:
- If your test is scheduled for after 12:00 noon, you may have a clear liquid breakfast and take your normal morning dose of medications, if any.
- Do not take anything by mouth after 8:30 a.m.
YOU MUST BE ACCOMPANIED TO THE PROCEDURE BY SOMEONE WHO CAN STAY THERE AS LONG AS YOU ARE THERE AND WHO WILL BE ABLE TO DRIVE YOU HOME AFTERWARDS. THIS PROCEDURE WILL BE CANCELLED IF THE PERSON THAT ACCOMPANIES YOU LEAVES THE PREMISES.
