Colonoscopy is a direct examination of your entire colon using a colonoscope.  A colonoscope is a soft, flexible instrument about the diameter of a finger, with a light and lens at the end which allows your doctor to see into your colon.  Prior to the procedure, you will be given a mild sedative.

YOU MUST BE ACCOMPANIED TO THE PROCEDURE BY SOMEONE WHO CAN STAY THERE AS LONG AS YOU ARE THERE AND WHO WILL BE ABLE TO DRIVE YOU HOME AFTERWARDS.  THIS PROCEDURE WILL BE CANCELLED IF THE PERSON THAT ACCOMPANIES YOU LEAVES THE PREMISES.

If polyp removal is required, the patient must stay in the Detroit area overnight after the procedure so that any bleeding, pain, or other untoward symptoms may be brought to the attention of the examining doctor promptly and proper treatment given.

If it is necessary to cancel this test, please call our office at (248) 273-9930, ext. 3034 or ext. 3036.

To prepare you for your exam, you will take one of the following preps.  All instructions must be meticulously adhered to in order that the bowel be sufficiently cleaned to permit an adequate examination. Avoid iron, aspirin compounds, ibuprofen and similar anti-arthritic drugs for one week prior to the procedure.  Tylenol is acceptable to take until the day of the procedure.
